The Celpe-Bras is Brazil’s official certificate of Portuguese as a foreign language, run by Inep twice a year. The 2026/2 exam ran October 20 to 23, 2026 in Brazil, and abroad it runs November 24 to 27, 2026. In Brazil the fee is capped at R$ 259 (about US$51, checked Oct 2026), and the certificate is one accepted proof of Portuguese for ordinary naturalization.
What the Celpe-Bras is
Inep, the federal education research and testing agency, manages the exam. It was created at the request of the Ministry of Education (MEC) and is the only certificate of Portuguese as a foreign language officially granted by the government of Brazil. Inep runs it each semester in Brazil and abroad, with support from MEC and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The exam tests the Brazilian variety of Portuguese. It is open to foreigners and to Brazilians whose mother tongue is not Portuguese, living in Brazil or abroad. You sit it at a test center, called a posto aplicador.

In 2026, Inep published the first edital in February and the second in July, with registration windows of about ten days.
Check before you go: Inep announces each edition in a new edital, usually a few weeks before registration opens. Watch Inep’s Celpe-Bras page for the 2027/1 dates, and set a reminder so you do not miss the short window.
Fees
In Brazil, each test center sets the fee, up to R$ 259 (about US$51, checked Oct 2026). Abroad, Inep suggests the equivalent of US$190 for the 2026/2 edition. Centers in Brazil may charge less but not more. The abroad figure applies to private centers and those linked to Itamaraty. For 2026/1 the suggested figure abroad was US$120, and the Brazil cap was the same R$ 259.
You pay the center directly, following its instructions, and the payment window cannot be extended. For 2026/2 that window ran July 27 to August 7, 2026. You may see older fee figures online, such as R$ 247 or US$115; always go by the current edital and your test center’s instructions.
Conversions on this page use R$ 5.08 per US$1, the rate used on money in Brazil.
Levels and scores
You need at least Intermediário (2.00 out of 5.00) on both the written part and the oral part. Your level is the lower of the two results. The bands are:
| Level | Score |
|---|---|
| No certificate (Sem certificação) | 0.00 to 1.99 |
| Intermediário | 2.00 to 2.75 |
| Intermediário Superior | 2.76 to 3.50 |
| Avançado | 3.51 to 4.25 |
| Avançado Superior | 4.26 to 5.00 |
Inep does not review scores. If you disagree with a result, your only option is to sit the exam again in a later edition.
The exam format
The written part has four writing tasks and lasts three hours in total. It assesses listening, reading and writing together: you watch a video or hear audio, read texts, and write in response, such as a letter, an email or an article. The oral part is a 20-minute face-to-face interaction in two stages, with one evaluator who talks with you and one who observes.
Your test center confirms the date, place and time of both parts. They appear on your registration confirmation card. You can only sit the exam at the center you chose.
On exam day abroad, bring a passport or an official photo ID valid in that country. In Brazil, the accepted list includes a passport, a CRNM migrant card and a DPRNM. Copies, birth certificates and badges are not accepted.
How to register
Registration happens only in the Sistema Celpe-Bras, at celpebras.inep.gov.br, during the window in the edital.
- Pick your country, state and test center. A finished registration cannot be cancelled or moved to another center.
- Enter a working phone number and email to get a login and password.
- Fill in your data and the questionnaire. Give your passport number or an ID number valid in the country where you register.
- Upload the documents the system asks for and finish the registration.
- Save the summary the system generates. You need it to track your registration, print the confirmation card, see results and issue the certificate.
- Ask your test center how to pay, and pay inside the window.
- Wait for the center to approve your registration. For 2026/2 the deadline was August 12, 2026.
Check your name and data carefully. The data you enter at registration are the data that appear on your certificate.
Results and the certificate
Individual results appear on the Inep site with your login. Inep also publishes results at Intermediário or above in the Diário Oficial da União.
There is no paper certificate. Inep issues an electronic certificate, validated by an electronic protocol, at celpebras.inep.gov.br/certificacao. You only get one if you reach Intermediário or higher.
Inep sets no expiry date. Each institution that uses the exam can set its own validity period. Brazilian universities recognize the exam as required proof of language for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs. Check with the university or agency that will read your certificate.
Celpe-Bras and naturalization
The Migration Law (Lei 13.445 of 2017) sets four conditions for ordinary naturalization in article 65. You need civil capacity, at least 4 years of residence, the ability to communicate in Portuguese “considering the applicant’s conditions,” and no criminal conviction, unless you have been rehabilitated. Article 66 cuts the residence period to 1 year in some cases, including a Brazilian child or a Brazilian spouse or partner you are not separated from.
You do not always need the Celpe-Bras for citizenship. A Celpe-Bras certificate is one of several documents the Ministry of Justice accepts as proof that you can communicate in Portuguese. A degree from a Brazilian university or an ENCCEJA certificate also counts. The ministry’s ordinary naturalization checklist, based on article 5 of Portaria 623 of November 13, 2020, accepts any one of these:
| Accepted proof of Portuguese | Detail from the checklist |
|---|---|
| Celpe-Bras certificate | Issued by Inep |
| Higher education or graduate degree | From a Brazilian institution accredited by MEC |
| Bar exam pass | Exame de Ordem of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) |
| Portuguese course for immigrants | Completed with satisfactory results at a higher education institution accredited by MEC |
| ENCCEJA certificate | Completion of primary or secondary school through this national adult exam |
| Public university post | Appointment as professor, technician or scientist after a public competition |
| Brazilian school records | Completion of primary, secondary or adult school at a recognized Brazilian school |
| Revalidated medical degree | Revalidated by a public university after the Revalida exam run by Inep |
The checklist names no minimum Celpe-Bras level. Inep only issues a certificate at Intermediário or above.
The Constitution sets a separate track for people from Portuguese-speaking countries. Article 12, II, a, asks them only for one year of uninterrupted residence and moral integrity. Portaria 623 of 2020, art. 5, § 1, also excuses nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries from the language proof. The Ministry of Justice lists Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste. The checklist names no exemption by age or disability, so if your situation is special, ask the Ministry of Justice before you apply.
The naturalization service is free and takes up to 180 calendar days for the whole process. Details are on Brazilian citizenship by naturalization.
Schools and courses in Brazil
Federal universities run Portuguese courses for foreigners, often through their international office. UFPel in Pelotas, for example, has run an in-person evening course exclusively for foreigners, and UFJF in Juiz de Fora offers Portuguese for Foreigners under the Idiomas sem Fronteiras program. These courses open registration once or twice a year. Ask the international office about fees, schedules and eligibility before you enroll.
A Portuguese course for immigrants at an MEC-accredited university also appears on the naturalization checklist above. A private language school certificate does not appear on that list.
Your visa matters if you plan a long course. Lei 13.445 lists tourism, business, transit, and artistic or sports activities as visit visa purposes (article 13). It grants the temporary study visa to people who come to attend a regular course or an internship or study exchange (article 14, § 4). Decree 9.199 of 2017, art. 37, words it as a visa to attend a “curso regular” or an internship or study exchange. Check before you go: if you plan to study at a private language school, ask the Brazilian consulate that will issue your visa whether the course qualifies, and ask the school whether it supports student visa applications. Do not enter as a visitor and plan to switch later. See the Brazil student visa page.
Abroad, Itamaraty’s Instituto Guimarães Rosa, created by Decreto 11.024 of 2022, is charged with promoting the Brazilian variety of Portuguese.
How to prepare
The Celpe-Bras rewards real communication. Every task asks you to understand a real text or video and write or speak for a specific reader and purpose. Practice in the same way.
- Work from past exams. Do each written task under time pressure, then compare your answer with the task’s purpose and audience.
- Write for a reader. Each task names who you are writing to and why. Match the register: formal for a letter to an official, lighter for a blog post.
- Listen every day. Brazilian podcasts, news and TV help with the video and audio tasks. Start with slower news programs and move to talk shows.
- Speak with real people. The oral part is a conversation about short prompts. A weekly session with a tutor or a conversation partner prepares you better than reading alone.
- Give yourself time. Most learners need many months of steady study to move from beginner to Intermediário. Aim above the minimum, because a stronger level opens more doors at universities and employers.
Living in Brazil is the fastest way to improve. Use Portuguese for errands, ask neighbors questions, and join local classes or clubs. Brazilians are usually patient with learners and glad to help.
Apps and free practice material
Pick an app or course that teaches Brazilian Portuguese, because the Celpe-Bras tests that variety. European Portuguese differs in pronunciation, some vocabulary and the use of forms of address. Duolingo offers a free Portuguese course for English speakers; check the variety of any course before you commit.
For exam practice, Inep’s Provas page has past exams by year from 1998 to 2019. The Acervo Celpe-Bras at UFRGS collects past exams and public documents on the exam.
Before you apply
Check the current edital for dates and your test center’s fee, then register inside the window. If you need the certificate for citizenship, read Brazilian citizenship by naturalization and compare every route on Brazil visas and residency. For a first trip, start with Portuguese phrases that help off route.
