São João, the feast of Saint John on June 24, falls on a Thursday in 2027. The big city festivals run for weeks around it. Caruaru in Pernambuco ran April 10 to June 27 in 2026, and Campina Grande in Paraíba ran June 3 to July 5 in 2026.

What São João is

São João is the biggest festival of the year in much of the Northeast. It brings forró music, quadrilha dances, bonfires and food made from corn, and it outshines Carnival in many interior towns.

The June festivals are called Festas Juninas. They honor three saints: Santo Antônio on June 13, São João on June 24 and São Pedro on June 29. The peak is June 23–24, the eve and day of Saint John.

The roots are Portuguese Catholic feasts, which met the harvest calendar of the Brazilian interior. June is corn season in the Northeast, so corn shapes the menu. The music grew in the sertão and the agreste. Forró, baião and xote, played on accordion, zabumba drum and triangle, are the sound of the season. Luiz Gonzaga, born in Exu, Pernambuco, made that music famous across Brazil.

Festas Juninas happen all over Brazil, in schools, churches and neighborhood squares. The Northeast runs the largest versions, and Caruaru and Campina Grande are the two biggest.

Under Lei 9.093/1995, cities may declare religious holidays, so June 24 can close offices locally. It is not a national holiday. See Brazil public holidays 2027.

Caruaru, Pernambuco

Caruaru runs one of the longest São João seasons in Brazil. In 2026 it started on April 10, with main programming through June 27.

The 2026 edition spread across 27 polos (venues) in the city and in rural communities. The main stages were the Polo Azulão and the Pátio de Eventos, where the closing show took place on June 27. The season opened with São João na Roça in the Lajes rural community. More than 70 percent of the lineup was chosen through a public call (edital), which gives space to local and regional artists. The city announced the full program on March 19, 2026.

Caruaru is also a center of popular art. The Alto do Moura neighborhood is known for its clay figurine makers, a tradition linked to Mestre Vitalino. Visit a workshop, and buy directly from the artisans.

Campina Grande, Paraíba

Campina Grande calls its festival the Maior São João do Mundo, the biggest São João in the world. The title is self-declared, but the scale is real.

The 2026 edition ran from June 3 to July 5 at the Parque do Povo, the open-air park at the center of the festival. In 2025 it ran 38 days, from May 30 to July 6, with more than 500 cultural attractions, including hundreds of free shows. Organizers expected over 3.5 million visitors in 2025, against 2.93 million in 2024.

The festival packs everything into one large venue. Expect main stages, smaller forró houses, food stalls and recreated sertão village scenes.

Getting there

Fly to Recife for Caruaru, or to João Pessoa or Recife for Campina Grande. Then continue by road.

Caruaru is in the agreste of Pernambuco, west of Recife on BR-232. The drive takes about two hours. Campina Grande is inland from João Pessoa on BR-230, also about two hours by road. Campina Grande has its own small airport with limited flights.

Long-distance buses connect both cities with the state capitals several times a day. Buses fill up in festival season, especially around June 23–24, so buy your ticket early at the rodoviária or online. For general planning, see domestic flights in Brazil and long-distance buses in Brazil.

Check before you go: Flight and bus fares rise sharply around June 24. Compare airlines and bus operators as soon as you fix your dates, and check the return trip too.

When to go

The peak is June 23–24, with Thursday, June 24, 2027 as the saint’s day. The festivals run for weeks on either side, so you can choose between peak crowds and quieter nights.

The best nights are the weekends close to June 24 and the eve itself. Weeknights earlier in the season are calmer and cheaper, with fuller access to food stalls and smaller stages.

June in the agreste is mild by Northeast standards, with cooler nights. Pack a light layer and expect some rain, which is more frequent on the coast. For weather, see the best time to visit Brazil.

Check before you go: Each city publishes its program in the months before the festival. Caruaru announced its 2026 program in mid-March. Watch the Prefeitura de Caruaru and Prefeitura de Campina Grande official sites and social channels for the 2027 dates, venues and lineup.

Where to base

Stay in the city that hosts the festival you choose. Book as early as you can, since rooms fill fast and prices rise near June 24.

Hotels and pousadas near the main venues are the most convenient and the most expensive. Many locals rent out rooms and houses during the festival. If the host city is full, Recife and João Pessoa work as fallback bases, but you then face a two-hour drive each way.

Ask your lodging about noise and transport. Shows run late into the night, and taxis and ride-hailing get scarce after the main concerts.

What to do

Dance, eat, listen and watch. São João is a participation festival, and people of all ages join in.

  • Forró. Dance with locals at the smaller stages and forró houses. Partner dancing is normal, and a polite “no, obrigado” or “obrigada” is fine.
  • Quadrilha. Groups in rural costume perform choreographed square dances, often in competitions. They rehearse for months.
  • Big stages. Both cities run large central venues, the Parque do Povo in Campina Grande and the polos in Caruaru. Major Brazilian stars headline.
  • Rural programs. Caruaru opened its 2026 season with a program in the Lajes rural community. These events show the festival closer to its roots.
  • Bonfires and fireworks. Fogueiras burn in streets and yards on the eve of Saint John.
  • Local food. Buy from the stalls and let the festival’s vendors earn from your visit.

What to eat

The menu is built on corn. Look for pamonha, a sweet corn paste cooked in the husk. Try canjica, a creamy corn pudding with coconut milk, and mungunzá, a white-corn porridge. Roasted or boiled corn on the cob is everywhere. Bolo de milho, a corn cake, and pé de moleque, a peanut sweet, round out the stalls.

Prices are posted at most stalls. Bring small notes.

Costs

Much of São João is free, and your main costs are travel and lodging. Both cities run large free programs, and the 2025 Campina Grande festival included hundreds of free shows.

Polo entry in CaruaruMany polos are free; ask the Prefeitura de Caruaru about any ticketed events
Parque do Povo entryHundreds of free shows; some areas and boxes may be ticketed

Respect at community festivals

Some programs sit inside rural and local communities, where you are a guest. Ask before you photograph dancers in quadrilha costume, and buy from local stalls.

Quadrilha costumes draw on rural life. Dress up if you like, with a checked shirt or a simple dress, but do not mock the people the costumes represent.

Planning order

  1. Pick the city. Caruaru spreads over many polos, and Campina Grande centers on one large venue.
  2. Watch for the official 2027 program, then fix your dates around June 24.
  3. Book lodging and transport as soon as you have dates.
  4. Carry cash for stalls. See money in Brazil.

Safety

Large crowds call for the usual care. Carry only what you need, keep your phone in a front pocket and agree a meeting point with your group. Use registered taxis or ride-hailing after late shows. Read is Brazil safe and scams in Brazil.

Skip it if

  • You dislike crowds. Campina Grande alone expected over 3.5 million visitors in 2025.
  • You want a quiet, cheap trip to the Northeast in June. Lodging and transport prices peak around June 24.
  • You do not enjoy late nights and loud music. Shows run past midnight.
  • You want Afro-Brazilian cultural programs. See the Afro-Brazilian travel guide.
