Northeast Brazil travel guide: coast, sertão and islands

On this page
Northeast Brazil is nine states with very different trips. You can see dune and lagoon country in Maranhão, reef pools in Alagoas, rock art in the Piauí interior and an island archipelago about 375 km (233 mi) offshore. The right choice depends on tide, season and fees. Fernando de Noronha costs R$ 904.50 in fees for five days (about US$178, checked Oct 2026), while Serra da Capivara charges no park entry.
Why go to the Northeast
The Northeast has Brazil’s warmest sea, its longest run of beaches and the deepest roots of Afro-Brazilian culture. The nine states are Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia.
The coast is the main draw. It runs from the dunes of Maranhão to the reefs of Alagoas and the bays of Bahia. Inland lies the sertão, a dry backland of scrub forest called caatinga, cattle ranches and small towns. This is where you find Serra da Capivara and its rock paintings.
Culture shifts from state to state. Salvador is the center of Afro-Brazilian religion, music and food. Recife and Olinda are known for frevo and maracatu at Carnival. The June festivals of São João fill the interior towns with forró and bonfires. Food runs from moqueca and acarajé in Bahia to carne de sol, baião de dois, tapioca and cuscuz across the region.
How to choose
| Place | State | What it is | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lençóis Maranhenses | Maranhão | Dunes and rain-fed lagoons, full from May | Lençóis Maranhenses |
| Barreirinhas, Atins, Santo Amaro | Maranhão | Base towns for the dunes | Where to base for Lençóis |
| Rota das Emoções | Maranhão, Ceará | The 4x4 route between Jericoacoara and Lençóis | Rota das Emoções |
| Jericoacoara | Ceará | Beach village with a kite season in September and October | Jericoacoara |
| São Miguel dos Milagres | Alagoas | Reef pools by jangada, tide-bound | São Miguel dos Milagres |
| Serra da Capivara | Piauí | Rock art, a UNESCO site; guide mandatory | Serra da Capivara |
| Fernando de Noronha | Pernambuco | Marine park island; two fees | Fernando de Noronha on a budget |
Pick dunes and lagoons if you travel between May and October. Pick the Alagoas reef pools if you want calm water and a slow beach week. Pick Serra da Capivara if you care about archaeology and do not mind long drives. Pick Noronha if wildlife and diving matter more than budget.

Getting around the Northeast
Distances are large, and there is no single transport network. Most travelers combine domestic flights between state capitals with buses, vans and 4x4 transfers for the last stretch.
The main airports are São Luís, Teresina, Fortaleza, Natal, João Pessoa, Recife, Maceió, Aracaju and Salvador. Long-distance buses link all of them, but rides between capitals often take a full day or night.
- To Serra da Capivara. It is about 530 km (329 mi) of asphalt from Teresina to São Raimundo Nonato. A second route runs roughly 300 km (186 mi) from Petrolina via Remanso, Bahia. The Boqueirão da Pedra Furada gate is 26 km (16 mi) from São Raimundo Nonato and the Serra da Vermelha gate 19 km (12 mi). Regular flights to São Raimundo Nonato are suspended. There is no public transport to the gates, so hire a car or arrange transport with your guide.
- To Fernando de Noronha. Almost everyone flies. There are about 34 weekly flights: Azul 18, GOL 11 and LATAM 5. Most leave from Recife or Natal.
- To the Alagoas coast. Maceió is the practical gateway for São Miguel dos Milagres. Reef pool tours follow the tide forecast for the Port of Maceió, so plan your days around low tide.
Check before you go: Road times and fares between stops change with the season and the operator. Buy bus tickets at the rodoviária or on the operator’s site, and book 4x4 legs with a local agency a day ahead. Read long-distance buses in Brazil, domestic flights in Brazil and renting a car in Brazil.

Climate and season
The Northeast is hot all year, so the question is rain. There are two main patterns.
The north coast, including Lençóis Maranhenses and Jericoacoara, is wetter in summer and autumn and drier in spring. The Lençóis lagoons are full from May, and the kite season runs in September and October. The east coast, including Recife, Maceió and Salvador, is wetter in winter and usually gets under 400 mm (16 in) in summer. That makes December to March the classic beach season there.
Serra da Capivara follows the dry interior pattern. You can visit all year. January to July is milder, and August to November is the hottest period, when midday walks get hard. The dry season runs from about May to December.
For month-by-month detail, read best time to visit Brazil.
Where to stay
Base yourself in small towns for nature and in capitals for culture and flights. Barreirinhas and Atins work for Lençóis. Jericoacoara village works for the Ceará coast. São Miguel dos Milagres has small pousadas along a quiet coast. São Raimundo Nonato is the base for Serra da Capivara.
Pousadas, small family-run guesthouses, are the standard lodging across the region. Book ahead for July, Carnival, the June festivals and the weeks around New Year. These are Brazilian holiday periods, and prices rise sharply.
Health and practical notes
- Yellow fever. The vaccine is recommended for Maranhão and Piauí and designated parts of Bahia. It is not recommended for Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Sergipe. Details are in Brazil vaccines and health.
- Time. Brasília time (UTC−3) covers the Northeast. Fernando de Noronha uses UTC−2, per Brazil time zones.
- Plugs. Fortaleza and Recife supply 220 V, and Salvador 127 V, per Brazil plugs and voltage.
- Sun and heat. The sun is strong near the equator. Use high-factor sunscreen, drink water often and avoid long walks at midday.
- Safety. Read is Brazil safe before you plan nights out in the coastal cities.
- Money. Small towns often take cash only. See money in Brazil.
Respect at the places you visit
Several stops on this page depend on local people who guide, row and cook for visitors. At Serra da Capivara the guides are local and credentialed, and you pay them directly. At São Miguel dos Milagres, pool tours go through authorized guides and boat operators. Hire credentialed people only, pay them directly and ask before photographing anyone. On Afro-Brazilian cultural trips, read the Afro-Brazilian travel guide and the page on visiting a quilombo first.
Skip the Northeast if
- You want a compact trip. Distances between the highlights are huge, and many legs take a full day.
- You need public transport to every sight. Several stops, including Serra da Capivara’s gates, need a car or a guide.
- You can spend only a few days. Pick one area, or save the region for a longer trip.
- You dislike heat. Inland, afternoon temperatures can be fierce for much of the year.
Questions
- What is the best time for the Northeast coast?
- It depends on the coast. The north coast, including Lençóis Maranhenses and Jericoacoara, is driest in the second half of the year, while the east coast from Recife to Salvador is driest in summer. The Lençóis lagoons are full from May.
- Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for the Northeast?
- It depends on the state. The vaccine is recommended for Maranhão, Piauí and parts of Bahia, and not for Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas or Sergipe. See the vaccines guide and talk to a travel clinic.
- Which Northeast places charge fees?
- Fernando de Noronha charges a R$ 384 marine park ticket plus a state fee from R$ 105.79 a day. Serra da Capivara has no park entry fee, but a local guide is mandatory. Jericoacoara village has no entry charge, though overnight visitors pay a municipal tourism fee.
- How do I reach Serra da Capivara?
- By road to São Raimundo Nonato, about 530 km (329 mi) of asphalt from Teresina, or roughly 300 km (186 mi) from Petrolina via Remanso, Bahia. Regular flights to São Raimundo Nonato are suspended, so plan to drive or take a long-distance bus.
- Is the Northeast in one time zone?
- Almost. All Northeast states use Brasília time (UTC−3), except Fernando de Noronha, which is on UTC−2.
- How many days should I plan?
- Allow at least 10 days for one coastal route, such as Lençóis to Jericoacoara. Add up to six days if you want to see the open circuits at Serra da Capivara in full.
