Rota das Emoções: Jericoacoara to Lençóis overland

The Rota das Emoções, or Route of Emotions, links Jericoacoara in Ceará, Parnaíba in Piauí and Barreirinhas, the gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses in Maranhão. The route runs about 500 km (310 mi) along the coast. Expresso Guanabara runs buses from Fortaleza or São Luís along it, stopping in Jijoca, Camocim, Parnaíba and Barreirinhas. You can do it by bus in legs, by 4x4 along the beaches, or with a mix of both.
Why do the route
The Rota das Emoções crosses three states and three very different landscapes in one line. In the west lie the dunes and rainwater lagoons of the Lençóis Maranhenses. In the middle, the Parnaíba Delta spreads into islands, mangroves and channels. In the east, Jericoacoara is a sand-street village inside a national park, with lagoons and wind-sport beaches nearby.
It is one of the most rewarding overland trips in Brazil. The scenery changes every day, and small towns along the way see far fewer visitors than the two ends. For a day-by-day plan, see 10 days in Northeast Brazil.
The route in legs
The route runs east to west or the reverse. These are the bus legs, from east to west.

Fares were checked for departures in October 2026. Some legs have only one or two departures a day, so buy your next ticket at the rodoviária or online a day ahead.
The Guanabara bus to Jijoca ends at the town, which is the municipal seat. The beach village is reached by a 4x4 transfer across the sand. Ask when you buy your bus ticket whether a transfer to the village is included or sold as an add-on.
By 4x4 along the coast. The alternative is to travel by 4x4 along the beaches, with river crossings by raft or ferry. This route passes places the bus skips, such as Tatajuba and the small dunes and lagoons near Paulino Neves. It depends on the tide, so operators set departure times each day. Book through an agency in Jericoacoara, Parnaíba or Barreirinhas.
How long it takes. Plan at least 5 days and up to 10. A comfortable 10-day split is 3 nights in Jericoacoara, 2 in Parnaíba and 5 in Barreirinhas or Atins. By road, Jericoacoara to Parnaíba takes about 4 hours and Parnaíba to Barreirinhas 3 to 4 hours.
Check before you go: 4x4 operators, prices and tide-timed departures change through the season. Ask two or three agencies for quotes a day ahead, and confirm whether the price is per person or per vehicle.
The stops along the way
Jericoacoara and Jijoca. Jijoca is the inland town where buses stop. Lagoa do Paraíso and Lagoa Azul sit nearby, with hammocks in the water. Jericoacoara village has the sunset dune, the Pedra Furada rock arch and steady wind for kitesurfing.
Camocim. This fishing town on the Coreaú River estuary has a riverfront and beaches across the water. It works as a quiet overnight stop between Jericoacoara and Parnaíba.
Parnaíba and the Delta. Parnaíba is the largest town in the middle of the route. Boats leave from Porto dos Tatus into the Delta, with mangroves, islands and the evening flight of scarlet ibis. Barra Grande, on the Piauí coast nearby, is a small kitesurfing village.
Barreirinhas and Atins. Barreirinhas, on the Rio Preguiças, is the main base for Lençóis Maranhenses tours. Atins, at the river mouth, is smaller and closer to the dunes. Boat trips between them stop at Vassouras and Caburé.
Flying part of the way
Air service along the route is limited. LATAM flies Parnaíba to Fortaleza twice a week. There are no scheduled flights to Barreirinhas, so use São Luís airport for that end.
Jericoacoara’s airport sits in Cruz, the gateway town. Fraport Brasil took over its operation on 1 September 2026. LATAM and GOL fly it to São Paulo/Guarulhos, and Azul flies it to Belo Horizonte/Confins. From there, a transfer takes you to the village.
Check before you go: Flight days and routes change often on these small airports. Check the airline sites for your dates before you build the trip around a flight. See domestic flights in Brazil.
When to go
The Lençóis end sets the calendar. The park is at its best, with full lagoons and steady weather, from May, and visits peak in July. September and October bring strong wind, ideal for kitesurfing at Atins, Barra Grande and Jericoacoara. January to April is the rainy season, when tracks get harder and some lagoons are still filling.
Read Lençóis Maranhenses: when the lagoons fill before you fix dates. For the Ceará end, see Jericoacoara.
Where to base at each end
At Jericoacoara, stay in the village to enjoy the evenings. Read the Jericoacoara page for the village entry rules. At the Lençóis end, Barreirinhas has the most visitor services, while Atins is quieter and closer to the dunes. See Barreirinhas vs Atins vs Santo Amaro.
In the middle, Parnaíba is the practical stop for the Delta, with hotels and pousadas in town. Book Delta boat tours through your lodging or at Porto dos Tatus, and ask whether the boat belongs to a local cooperative.

Practical tips
- Carry cash. Small towns have few ATMs, and card machines can fail when the signal drops.
- Pack a soft bag. Luggage rides in 4x4 beds and small boats.
- Keep a dry bag for your phone and documents on river crossings.
- Bring strong sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for the dunes.
- Leave a buffer day in case a tide or a sold-out bus moves your plans.
Skip it if
- You have fewer than a week. The route needs 5 to 10 days to enjoy it without spending every day in transit.
- You need one ticket for the whole route. The bus legs are sold separately, with one through departure from Jijoca to Barreirinhas at 14:24.
- You plan to go in the first months of the year. The best Lençóis landscape starts in May.
- Long rides on sand tracks wear you out. Several legs are bumpy and hot.
