Jericoacoara is a sand-street village on the Ceará coast, surrounded by Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara. Visitors pay a municipal tourism fee of R$ 41.50 for stays up to 10 days (about US$8, checked Oct 2026), and a federal appeals court has kept the village itself free of any entry charge. From Fortaleza, the bus to Jijoca takes 4 h 30 to 7 h 39, and a 4x4 transfer covers the last stretch.

Why go

Jericoacoara, or Jeri, is a former fishing village set between dunes, lagoons and a wide beach. It is one of the best-known beach towns in Brazil, popular for sunsets, kitesurfing and a relaxed, barefoot feel.

The village has no paved streets. Its lanes are sand, and cars stay outside it, so you arrive by 4x4 or buggy. Inside, you find pousadas, restaurants, bars and shops packed into a few blocks, with dunes rising on one side and the sea on the other.

The setting is protected. The national park covers 8,855.36 ha in the municipalities of Cruz and Jijoca de Jericoacoara. It was created by a decree of February 4, 2002, and its boundaries were revised by Lei 11.486 of June 15, 2007. The village sits within the park’s area but is municipal land.

Getting there

Most visitors come from Fortaleza by bus or transfer, or fly to Jericoacoara Airport in Cruz. Either way, the last stretch is a 4x4 ride over sand.

By bus. Expresso Guanabara runs the route from Fortaleza to Jijoca. Buses leave early in the morning, from about 05:00 to 06:40, from four Fortaleza pickup points: Beira Mar, the airport, Rodoviária João Thomé and Terminal Antônio Bezerra. There are also mid-morning and late-night departures. Night trips are the fastest, at 4 h 30 to 5 h 10, and arrive around 04:25. The 05:00 pickup at Beira Mar takes 7 h 39. Buses end at Jijoca, and the village is reached by transfer.

By private transfer. Many pousadas and agencies in Fortaleza sell door-to-door transfers by van or 4x4. They cost more than the bus but save the change at Jijoca.

By air. Jericoacoara Airport is in Cruz, the gateway to the village. Fraport Brasil, which runs Fortaleza airport, took over operations on September 1, 2026, under a concession running to 2047. LATAM and GOL fly to Guarulhos (São Paulo), and Azul flies to Confins (Belo Horizonte). The airport handled about 260,000 passengers in 2025. Transfers to the village continue by 4x4.

Check before you go: Flight days and times change by season. Check LATAM, GOL and Azul directly, and book your airport transfer with your pousada. Ask your pousada too for a trusted 4x4 operator from Jijoca and the current fare.

Fees and what is free

You pay one fee to visit Jericoacoara: the municipal tourism fee. Entry to the village itself is free, and some park attractions may charge separately.

  • Municipal tourism fee (TTS). R$ 41.50 per visitor for stays up to 10 days, and R$ 4.15 for each extra day (about US$0.82, checked Oct 2026). The Prefeitura de Jijoca de Jericoacoara collects it. Pay online in advance through the prefeitura’s site or at the village entrance. The fee is set under a municipal complementary law (LC 107/2015, amended by LC 178/2022).
  • Exemptions. Children up to 12, people over 60, people with disabilities with a medical report, residents of Jijoca de Jericoacoara and village workers with proof of employment.
  • No entry charge for the village. The park concessionaire, Urbia Cataratas, proposed a daily charge to enter the village. Courts blocked it. On December 9, 2025 the TRF5 federal appeals court rejected ICMBio’s appeal, holding that the village is municipal land and not part of the conceded territory. On October 3, 2026 the court’s vice-presidency declined to admit the concessionaire’s further appeal, ruling that “a Vila de Jericoacoara não é Parque e o Parque não é Vila” (the village is not the park, and the park is not the village). The case can still go to a higher court, but the municipal fee is the only fee in force for the village.
  • Park attractions. The concessionaire may charge visitors who go to specific park attractions, such as Pedra Furada. People who only cross the park to reach the village do not pay.

Check before you go: Ask ICMBio, Urbia Cataratas or your pousada whether any park attraction you plan to visit charges a ticket, and how much. Brazil’s national parks: fees tracks the national picture.

When to go

Jericoacoara is warm and sunny most of the year. The main choice is between the windy season and the rainy season.

The wetter season on Brazil’s north coast falls in summer and autumn, roughly February to June, with April usually the wettest. Showers often come in the afternoon or at night, and the lagoons near Jijoca fill up after the rains.

The windy, dry season runs roughly from July to January. Strong, steady trade winds make it one of the world’s best-known kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations. Wind also blows sand, so bring sunglasses.

Brazilian holidays, Christmas, New Year’s, Carnival and July school holidays bring the biggest crowds and highest prices. For the national picture, see best time to visit Brazil.

Where to base

Stay in the village if you want to walk everywhere. Stay outside it if you want quiet or a kitesurf base.

  • The village center puts you near restaurants, bars and the beach. It can be noisy at night in high season.
  • The edges of the village, toward the dunes or the far end of the beach, are quieter and still within walking distance.
  • Preá, a beach east of Jeri, is a popular base for kitesurfers, with lodges close to the wind.
  • Jijoca de Jericoacoara, the inland town, is cheaper and close to the Lagoa do Paraíso, but you need transport to reach the beach.

Lodging runs from hostels and simple pousadas to boutique hotels. Book early for high season. Ask whether the pousada arranges transfers, since most do.

Respect village life. Residents and workers organized to keep the village free of an entry charge, and they continue to defend that access. Buy from local businesses, and keep noise down late at night.

What to do

Jeri’s days follow a simple rhythm: beach and lagoons by day, sunset on the dune, dinner and music at night. Plan at least three nights.

  • Sunset on the Duna do Pôr do Sol. Climb the big dune at the edge of the village to watch the sun go down over the sea. Capoeira groups often play on the beach below.
  • Pedra Furada. A natural rock arch on the coast east of the village. Walk along the beach at low tide or over the headland. Check the tide times first.
  • Lagoa do Paraíso and Lagoa Azul. Freshwater lagoons near Jijoca with clear water and hammocks strung over the shallows. Buggy tours visit them, and they are fullest after the rainy season.
  • Árvore da Preguiça. A tree bent flat by the wind, a quick stop on buggy tours.
  • Buggy tours. Local drivers run east and west tours to lagoons, dunes and fishing villages. Agree the route, stops and price before you leave.
  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing. Schools in Jeri and Preá offer lessons and rentals in the windy season.
  • Forró and live music. Bars in the village host forró nights and live music in high season.

Costs

Jeri is more expensive than most of Ceará, because everything arrives over sand and demand is high. Budget extra in high season.

Lodging and food prices vary widely with the season. Compare buggy tour prices at two or three agencies in the village. Carry some cash for small purchases.

Practical tips

  • Walk barefoot or in sandals. The streets are sand.
  • Bring a headlamp. Village lighting is dim at night.
  • Pay the tourism fee online before you travel to save time at the entrance.
  • Protect your phone and camera from blowing sand in the windy season.

Skip it if

  • You want a quiet beach in high season. The village fills at Christmas, New Year’s, Carnival and in July.
  • You cannot spend 4 h 30 to 7 h 39 on a bus plus a transfer, and flights do not fit your dates.
  • You expect a park ticket at the village gate. Village access is free, and attraction charges are separate.
  • You dislike wind. From about July to January it blows hard most days.
