Barreirinhas, Atins or Santo Amaro: where to base for Lençóis

Barreirinhas is the practical base for Lençóis Maranhenses, with the largest visitor structure and the national park office. Santo Amaro has had a paved access road since 2017 and gives you the eastern lagoons with fewer crowds. Atins, a village in Barreirinhas municipality, sits on the coast and is reached by boat or 4x4 over sand.
Why the base matters
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a huge field of white dunes on the coast of Maranhão, with rainwater lagoons between the dunes for part of the year. No roads cross it. Each town reaches a different sector of the park, and tours from one town rarely reach the lagoons of another.
Your base decides which lagoons you see, how much time you spend in transfers and what your evenings are like. Many travelers split their stay between two bases, often Barreirinhas and Atins, or Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro.
Getting there
All three bases are in Maranhão, and São Luís is the gateway airport. Barreirinhas is the bus town. Crisbell (Convencional, R$ 70, about US$14, checked Oct 2026) and Expresso Guanabara (Executivo, R$ 76, about US$15, checked Oct 2026) run São Luís to Barreirinhas in about 4 h 30. More detail is on the Lençóis Maranhenses page.
São Luís is about 240 to 260 km (149 to 162 mi) from both Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro. The paved highway takes about 3 h 30 by car, depending on which town you head for. Shared vans and agency transfers take longer because they collect passengers at hotels.
| Leg | Mode | Time | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| São Luís to Santo Amaro | Shared van or agency transfer | About 4 h to 4 h 30 | About R$ 60 to R$ 70 (about US$12 to US$14, checked Oct 2026), 2023 fare |
| Barreirinhas to Santo Amaro | Paved road, 80 to 95 km (50 to 59 mi); van or 4x4 | About 1 h 30 by 4x4 | Shared van about R$ 50 (about US$10, checked Oct 2026), 2023 fare |
| Barreirinhas to Atins | Fast boat on the Preguiças River | 50 min to 1 h 30 | About R$ 60 to R$ 100 (about US$12 to US$20, checked Oct 2026) |
| Barreirinhas to Atins | 4x4 over sand, about 20 km (12 mi) | About 2 h to 2 h 30 | About R$ 80 to R$ 100 (about US$16 to US$20, checked Oct 2026) |
Boat operators to Atins include Satur and K-Beça Turismo. Boats land at Porto de Atins at the edge of the village, and the fare often includes a truck ride from the landing to your inn. There is no direct transport from São Luís to Atins, and no direct link between Atins and Santo Amaro, so you pass through Barreirinhas. The only other way between Atins and Santo Amaro is the multi-day trek across the dunes, the Travessia dos Lençóis, which ICMBio regulates.
Check before you go: van, boat and 4x4 fares change by season. Confirm the price and departure time with your lodging, the operator or the Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro tourist offices a day or two ahead.
When to go
The lagoons fill with rainwater during the wet season, roughly January to June. They are usually fullest from about June to September, which is the main season to visit. By late in the year many lagoons shrink or dry up, though the dunes stay open.
Wind is the other factor. The second half of the year is windy along this coast, which draws kitesurfers to Atins. If you plan to kite, that is the season to go. If you want calm days on the dunes, go earlier in the season.
The three bases compared
| Barreirinhas | Santo Amaro | Atins | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role in the park | Park office and the largest visitor structure | Second gateway, with its own sector of lagoons | Coastal village in Barreirinhas municipality |
| Road | Paved highway from São Luís | Paved since 2017; nearest access point from São Luís | Unpaved sand tracks; boat or 4x4 from Barreirinhas |
| Tours | 4x4 vehicles authorized by ICMBio to a support point | Land and boat tours | Authorized transport providers |
| Known for | Lagoa Azul, Lagoa Bonita | Lagoa da Andorinha, Betânia, Lagoa do Junco, Lagoa das Américas | Praia dos Lençóis, about 20 km long; Lagoa do Kite |
| Feel | Busy river town with many hotels and agencies | Small, sandy town with fewer visitors | Quiet village of sand streets and pousadas |
Barreirinhas
Choose Barreirinhas for the widest choice of tours, lodging and restaurants, and for the park office. Tours leave in 4x4 vehicles authorized by ICMBio and drive to a support point at the edge of the dunes, from where you walk.
Lagoa Azul has the largest concentration of visitors and vehicles in the park, and Lagoa Bonita is the other main circuit. Barreirinhas is also the start of the popular boat trip down the Preguiças River, which stops at riverside villages, small dunes and the coast near Caburé and the Mandacaru lighthouse.
The town is the easiest place to find ATMs, pharmacies and supermarkets. It is busy and practical, with little of the quiet you find in Atins.
Santo Amaro
Choose Santo Amaro to start from the paved eastern road, the nearest access point from São Luís. Its sector has Lagoa da Andorinha, the busiest lagoon on this side, and Betânia, reachable by land or by water on the Rio Grande. Lagoa do Junco keeps a good water level into the dry months. Boat tours to Lagoa das Américas also leave from Santo Amaro.
The dunes start close to town, so lagoons here can feel less crowded than around Barreirinhas. The town’s streets are soft sand where only 4x4 vehicles run, so your pousada or tour operator will usually collect you.
Atins
Choose Atins for the coast, a slower pace and kitesurfing. The Praia dos Lençóis is a coastal stretch about 20 km long, and the Lagoa do Kite draws kitesurfers. Visitors move around with authorized providers on unpaved sand tracks.
Nearby, the Canto dos Lençóis (also called Canto do Atins) is a traditional community that fishes, raises animals and serves meals to visitors. It is known for grilled shrimp. Treat the people there as hosts: ask before photographing, and pay directly for meals and beds.
Atins has limited services. Bring enough cash, since card machines and ATMs can be unreliable.
Inside the park
Two communities live in the center of the park, Queimada dos Britos and Baixa Grande. Residents offer hammock lodging and meals, and tourism has become a new source of income for them. These stays pay residents directly. They are far from the bases above, so they suit a multi-day crossing more than a day trip.
Costs and booking
Lodging prices rise in July and around holidays, when Brazilian families travel. Book early for those weeks. Barreirinhas has the widest price range. Atins has more small pousadas aimed at independent travelers and kitesurfers. Ask your lodging to book transfers and tours, since many pousadas work with local operators and can collect you.
Check lodging rates with the properties directly and with the municipal tourist offices. Compare the total cost of transfers when you split your stay between two bases.
Skip it if
- You want one sleeping place for every tour. The three bases serve different sectors, with different lagoons for each.
- You visit late in the year and want full lagoons. Many lagoons are low or dry by then.
- You rely on a car. Atins has only sand tracks, tours inside the park run in authorized 4x4 vehicles, and Santo Amaro’s streets are soft sand.
- You expect to move between Atins and Santo Amaro in one hop. The only direct route is a multi-day trek; otherwise you return through Barreirinhas.
- You want nightlife and shopping. Atins and Santo Amaro are quiet, and even Barreirinhas is a small town.
Read Brazil long-distance buses for ticket rules before you book a bus.
