Ibitipoca State Park covers 1,488 ha (about 15 km²) in the Serra do Ibitipoca, in Lima Duarte, Minas Gerais. A ticket costs R$ 34 (about US$6.70, checked Oct 2026), and the park caps entry at 1,000 visitors a day. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 7:00 to 17:00 and is closed on Mondays.

Why go

Ibitipoca is a small mountain park with a lot packed into it. In a day you can walk to quartzite caves, tea-colored river pools, natural rock arches and high viewpoints over the hills of southern Minas.

Law 6.126 of 4 July 1973 created the park. It touches Lima Duarte, Santa Rita de Ibitipoca and Bias Fortes. The rock is mostly quartzite, which forms the park’s caves, ledges and white sand beaches along the streams. The water runs dark red-brown, stained by organic matter from the vegetation, and it is clean and cold.

The highest point, Lombada, reaches 1,784 m (5,853 ft). The best-known view is the Janela do Céu, the “window to the sky”, a rock pool at the lip of a waterfall that frames the valley below.

The park is popular with weekend visitors from Juiz de Fora, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro. The daily cap keeps the trails from feeling crowded, but it also means you must book.

Getting there

The only entrance is in the district of Conceição do Ibitipoca, in Lima Duarte. You need a car or an organized transfer for the final stretch.

There are two driving routes from Belo Horizonte:

  1. Via Lima Duarte. Take BR-040 toward Rio de Janeiro, then BR-267 toward Lima Duarte, before Juiz de Fora. From Lima Duarte, drive about 26 km (16 mi) on unpaved road to Conceição do Ibitipoca, then about 3 km (2 mi) on paved road to the park.
  2. Via Barbacena. Take BR-040 to the Barbacena junction, then MG-338 toward Ibertioga. Then drive about 45 km (28 mi) of unpaved road through Santa Rita de Ibitipoca. There are many crossroads, so follow the signs.

From Rio de Janeiro, drive to Juiz de Fora on BR-040 and continue to Lima Duarte. Juiz de Fora is the nearest large city, with long-distance buses and car rental.

The unpaved stretch can be dusty in the dry season and muddy after rain. A regular car usually manages it with care. Drive slowly and avoid arriving after dark.

Parking is sold online and at the box office. Online spots are limited to 50, and up to 50 more are sold on site. Book parking with your ticket on busy weekends.

Check before you go: Bus and van service to Conceição do Ibitipoca is limited. Ask the Lima Duarte municipal tourism office or your pousada about transfers from Lima Duarte or Juiz de Fora before you travel without a car.

When to go

The park is open year-round. The dry winter months, roughly June to August, bring clear skies and cold nights. The summer months, roughly November to January, are the wettest.

The climate is mild and high-altitude. Summer brings warm days, afternoon storms and full waterfalls. Winter brings dry trails and frosty mornings. The mountain is generally cold, so pack a warm layer in any season. Thick fog and storms with lightning are real risks. Turn back from high, exposed ground if a storm builds.

The park fills on holidays and long weekends. It received 64,077 visitors from September 2023 to March 2024, and around 90,000 a year before the concession. Slots are sold by date, so book before you drive. A ticket stays valid for up to 7 days after the scheduled date, subject to rescheduling rules.

Opening days. The park opens Tuesday to Sunday, including holidays, from 7:00 to 17:00. Camping reservations on Sunday leave on Monday. Sunday day-visit rules have changed before, so message Parquetur on WhatsApp at (32) 99861-8829 before you plan a Sunday visit.

Where to base

Stay in Conceição do Ibitipoca, a small village about 3 km (2 mi) from the park gate. The only overnight option inside the park is camping.

Conceição do Ibitipoca has stone streets, a historic church, pousadas, restaurants and a few bars. It fills on holiday weekends, so book ahead. Lima Duarte, further away, has more everyday services.

Camping in the park: up to 30 tents, hot showers, check-in 7:00 to 16:00 and check-out by 9:00. Camping is R$ 45 per person (about US$8.90, checked Oct 2026), and you buy the park ticket separately.

Book village lodging directly or through a booking site. Ask whether the pousada can arrange a transfer to the gate.

What to do

The park offers three self-guided circuits. Licensed guides are available, and a guide, helmet, boots and spare light are recommended for the caves.

CircuitRound tripTimeHighlights
Circuito das ÁguasAbout 5.2 km (3.2 mi)About 5 hours, steep sectionsPrainha, Gruta dos Gnomos, Ponte de Pedra, Lago dos Espelhos
Circuito do PiãoAbout 9.5 km (5.9 mi)About 6 hours, moderatePico do Pião, Gruta do Pião, Cachoeira do Encanto, Pedra Furada
Circuito Janela do CéuAbout 16 km (10 mi)A full day, hardestLombada (1,784 m or 5,853 ft, the park’s highest point), Janela do Céu, Cachoeirinha

Circuito das Águas is the shortest and suits families. It follows the river past small beaches, pools and a natural stone bridge.

Circuito do Pião climbs to the Pico do Pião for wide views and passes caves and waterfalls on the way.

Janela do Céu is the long walk most people come for. The viewpoint is about 8 km (5 mi) from the entrance, and the circuit allows only 240 people a day. An optional UTV ride has been offered on part of this route. Ask the park for the current price.

Last-entry times apply to each circuit, and the long one closes first. Expect a cutoff early in the morning for Janela do Céu, around midday for Pico do Pião and mid-afternoon for Circuito das Águas. Confirm the day’s times at the gate, and start Janela do Céu as early as you can.

Cheese. Serras da Ibitipoca is one of ten officially recognized microregions for artisanal Minas cheese. Look for local cheese in the village. Read comida mineira for how that cheese is made and sold.

Practical tips

  • Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and food for the long circuits.
  • Wear boots with grip. Quartzite is slippery when wet.
  • Carry a headlamp for the caves, even on a guided walk.
  • Pack a rain jacket and a warm layer. Weather changes fast on the ridge.
  • Leave early to beat the last-entry cutoffs and the afternoon storms.

Skip it if

  • You have no car. Public transport to Conceição do Ibitipoca is limited, and the last 26 km (16 mi) from Lima Duarte are unpaved.
  • You can only come on a Monday. The park is closed.
  • You want to drink on the trail. Alcohol is banned outside the restaurant.
  • You are traveling with a dog. Pets are not allowed.
  • You expect to decide on the day. Slots are capped, and the Janela do Céu circuit allows only 240 people a day.

Plan the drive with car rental in Brazil, and see the Minas Gerais hub for nearby towns. Serra da Canastra is the other big outdoors stop in the state.
