Inhotim day trip from Belo Horizonte: tickets, hours

On this page
Inhotim is an art and garden park in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. A one-day ticket costs R$ 65 (about US$13, checked Oct 2026), and the gates open at 9:30 am. Plan your visit for Wednesday to Sunday. Belo Horizonte hotels sit 55 to 63 km (34 to 39 mi) away, so a day trip means an early start.
Why go
Inhotim is one of the largest open-air collections of contemporary art in the world, set inside a botanical garden. It is the main reason many travelers add Belo Horizonte to a Brazil trip.
The park mixes large outdoor sculptures, pavilions built for a single artist or a single work, and wide gardens with lakes and palms. Brazilian artists sit alongside international names. Galleries devoted to Adriana Varejão and Tunga, and works by Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Pape and Cildo Meireles, are among the highlights. Many visitors also come for the plant collection, which is as much a draw as the art.
The site is hilly and spread out. Walking between pavilions takes time, and a single day covers only part of it. Pick a few works in advance and treat the rest as a bonus.
Brumadinho is also the town where a mining dam collapse in January 2019 killed about 270 people. Many local families still live with that loss. Visit with that in mind.
Getting there
Most visitors come from Belo Horizonte by car, transfer or tour. The drive takes you southwest of the city into hilly mining country.
Inhotim’s address is Street B, No. 20, Inhotim Farm, Brumadinho, MG, ZIP 32.497-142. Belo Horizonte hotels sit about 55 to 63 km (34 to 39 mi) from the gate, such as Novotel BH Savassi at 55 km and Hilton Garden Inn Belo Horizonte at 59 km.
By car. Take the BR-381 or BR-040 highways, passing through Piedade do Paraopeba or Topo do Mundo. Allow extra time for traffic leaving Belo Horizonte in the morning. The park has parking for visitors.
By transfer. Two transfer services run from Belo Horizonte to Inhotim. Agencies and hotels in Belo Horizonte also sell day trips with transport included.
From Confins airport. Confins is north of Belo Horizonte, so Inhotim is a long drive from the airport. Spend a night in the city or near the park rather than heading straight from a flight.
Check before you go: Transfer companies, departure points, times and fares change. Ask the Inhotim call center at (+55) 31 3571 9700, open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, or contact it by WhatsApp. Check the drive time on a maps app on the morning you travel.
For the airport, read airport to city transfers for the general approach, and long-distance buses in Brazil for booking.
When to go
Go Wednesday to Sunday, and arrive at opening time. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.
| Days | Hours |
|---|---|
| Wednesday to Friday | 9:30 am to 4:30 pm |
| Saturdays, Sundays and holidays | 9:30 am to 5:30 pm |
Mondays are closed. Tuesdays are normally kept for maintenance, though the park has opened on Tuesdays during school holidays, such as July. If you can only go on a Tuesday, confirm with Inhotim first.
Free days. Wednesdays and the last Sunday of each month are free, with a prior reservation on Sympla. Free days are popular, so reserve early and expect more people.
Works under maintenance. Some galleries and works close for maintenance at any given time. The home page’s “Today” panel shows what is closed on your day. Check it before you go, especially if you are traveling for one specific work.
The rainy season runs roughly from November to March, with afternoon storms. The drier months from about May to September are cooler and better for walking. Bring a hat and water in any season. For weather in the Southeast, see best time to visit Brazil.
Where to base
Stay in Belo Horizonte and go for the day, or sleep near the gate. A night nearby saves the long drive in each direction and lets you start at 9:30 am without a morning transfer.
Near the gate. Clara Arte Resort, an official partner, sits at the park. Alta Vista Inn, Green Villas and Mountain Town sit 4.5 to 5 km away. Hotel Fazenda Horizonte Belo is at 10 km and Igarapés Farm Hotel at 20 km.
In Belo Horizonte. Fasano and Mercure Lourdes sit about 55 km from the gate, and Radisson Blu about 63 km. Belo Horizonte gives you more restaurants, nightlife and transport options.
Ask each hotel for current rates, and book ahead for long weekends and the July holidays.
What to do
Plan a route before you arrive. The park is large, and it rewards a focused visit.
Choose your ticket length. Inhotim sells one-day, two-day and three-day tickets. One day covers the main highlights at a brisk pace. Two days let you see most pavilions without rushing. Three days suit art lovers and photographers.
Pick your priority works. Look at the park map and app before your visit. Group works by area so you do not cross the park several times. The app also offers themed routes, including one focused on Brazilian artists.
Use the carts. The internal cart service runs 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday to Friday and 10 am to 5 pm on weekends and holidays. It links the main areas and saves steep walks. Check availability in advance. Inhotim also offers exclusive transport with a driver for one hour or a whole day.
Plan your meals. Restaurants and cafés inside the park run from about 9:30 or 10:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and to 17:00 or 17:30 on weekends and holidays. Eat lunch early to avoid the midday lines.
Walk the gardens. Leave time to wander. The lakes, palm groves and plant collections are part of the experience, and some of the best views are between pavilions.
Pair it with Minas towns. The Minas Gerais guide shows how Inhotim fits with Ouro Preto.
